This holiday season, Shred Right would like to emphasize the importance of giving back to the community. Although we are rolling out our #Shred4Good fundraising program for schools early next year, we’d like to highlight some of the ways you can help those in need right now. Hardships are often magnified when the holidays approach and the Twin Cities has no shortage of opportunities to assist others.

Here are some ways you can positively impact your community this holiday season.

Volunteering

Providing any amount of your time to volunteering around the community makes a big impact, no matter the outlet. The holidays are often accompanied by wintry weather which causes a higher influx of those who need shelter and assistance from harsh conditions. This influx translates into a higher demand for volunteers to accommodate those in need.

These are only a few examples of places to volunteer for this holiday season:

  1. For seniors: Visiting with residents at local senior centers brings a sense of the holiday spirit, especially for many who don’t have family close by during this season. Meals On Wheels is another senior program in which volunteers deliver meals to senior citizens who may be unable to leave their homes because of disabilities.
  2. Local animal shelters: Supporting staff at shelters by walking dogs, cleaning, participating in community outreach and assisting at events is great way to give back to animals who need a home.
  3. Children’s Hospital: Volunteering at Children’s MN means providing care to sick children and their family members by reading books, helping at fundraisers or assisting with the PAWH program.
  4. Local homeless shelters: Volunteers at homeless shelters often serve meals, provide transportation and/or sort donated items.
  5. Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity: This volunteer program allows you to be a part of eliminating homelessness in your communities by assisting with the construction of homes for local families in need.
  6. YMCA Twin Cities: Volunteering at the Y provides an opportunity to give back to your local community and promote diversity, inclusion, and improve the quality of children’s lives.

Donations

If time is not a luxury you have at your disposal during the bustling holiday season, donations are always appreciated for those in need. Some items to donate to your local community include:

  1. Food supplies to local food banks/shelves
  2. Toys, pet food and beds for local animal shelters
  3. Warm winter clothing and outerwear for homeless shelters
  4. Giving blood
  5. Toys for Tots
  6. Toys for children in hospice care
  7. Sending care packages to troops overseas

Giving back is a great way to instill holiday spirit into the community and Shred Right values impacting the Twin Cities in positive ways. We hope you and yours have a wonderful holiday season and encourage you to spread holiday cheer and kindness! Giving back doesn’t have to end at the holiday season, though, and we think it’s a great idea to make a positive impact in your community year-round!

Wishing you a prosperous year in 2018,

The Shred Right Team
